Certainly a practical scale, but for me the gauge would be the problem, but perhaps for the more-mechanically inclined. I’d rather stick some pretty bits of cardboard together with PVA and place them on a chassis and track that is bulletproof than the other way around.

Close enough I’d say. Something similar from lettraset was used on most NZ120 models in the 90s/early 2000s.
If you wanted to get reaaaaaally fussy, the Univers typeface that NZR used for fruit salad had a ‘straight’ serif on the 1, a straight leg on the 7 and a 90-degree top-right corner on the 5

Some sound chips have several loco engine sounds and horns embedded, or you might pick a decoder that has something close enough to NZ:
alco – DE/DG/original DF at a stretch
non-turbocharged EMD engine – DC or at a stretch DA
turbocharged EMD – DFT
GE uboat/dash 8 etc – DX -

NZR locos and Railcars 1980 and 1983 editions both have a good plan. 13106 over headstocks, 10210 wheelbase, 2210 bogie wheelbase3531 high, 2591 wide
