Hi Peter, sorry what chassis did you use under these again?
Cheers
Nick
Your Steam loco fleet is certainly very impressive. Interested to know how you have gone about constructing the cow catchers for your locos. Would you be able to post some info on their construction? By the way I also use kato track and have found that if you take the straight sections and cut through the base at whatever spacing you need you can bend to form non standard shallow curves, useful for around station platform, etc.
cheers

Thanks Peter, you make a tricky job look so easy and the end result looks good.
cheers
Grahame
Now that is a great idea!

Sorry Iddy900, didn't mean to ignore ya, finally found the chassis info. They are both Spectrum USRA 4-8-2 Light Mountain Union Pacific's
Thanks for the Chassis details. The same mechanism (with a tweak to the trailing bogie) will also do for a K, Ka or Kb.
What is the minimum radius you are using on that layout set-up - particularly on that turning loop at the left-hand end on the YouTube clip?
The smallest radius curve is 315mm, I do have some 216mm radius curves but i dont use them on the main line.
They are good chassis, a bit too light in my opinion on the driving wheels, to much slipping under load.
Another shot of progress.

I have heard of people swapping the 3rd & 4th drivers so the tyres are on the rearmost axle as apparently theres not a lot of eveness in the axle location so sometimes the rubber drivers are barely touching the rail if at all - appears to vary between individual models, some US modellers are very derogatory towards the model, but I think they run beautifully - just run a 'less than train load' :)
Funny thing is the streamlining that was 'adapted' from Otto Kuhlers' New Haven I class looks soooo much better on the NZR J
Yes there is a bit of play on the wheels, Can't have everything im afraid! I've always had a soft spot for streamlined J's, They really look the part.
I've just been putting pics of each models onto a blog, http://newzealandrailwaymodels.blogspot.co.nz/
Hi Muir, I agree, The wheels have a very loose fit on the chassis. Just ran them both before and confirmed it. Might take it apart again and see how simple moving the tyre wheels around and see if it makes a difference. BTW, I've just been putting pics up of my locos on a blog. http://newzealandrailwaymodels.blogspot.co.nz/ Also got scenery finally!
