I went to Tawhiti Museum out of Hawera yesterday to break up the drive from Wellington to Auckland. It was excellent. There’s a lot more than what I’ve taken pictures of here and I strongly recommend putting aside at least three hours to see the main displays, I didn’t see the Whalers & Traders section.
The bush tramway was operating as well, this only happens on Sundays during summer though.
There’s a layout as well, unfortunately, 1:64 / Sn3.5 scale for us, but still to a very high standard.January 21, 2019 at 11:17 am #5039January 21, 2019 at 11:28 am #5046January 21, 2019 at 1:58 pm #5049
Yes. Definitely worth the trip to visit. I went a few years ago and the standard of modelling and attention to detail is incredible. Especially some of the diorama scenes of early NZ life including the Pa sites. But capturing the look of the NZ bush is so realistic, it has to been seen.January 21, 2019 at 2:18 pm #5050
I’d love to know what he used for fern bushes, appears to be a real-life weedJanuary 21, 2019 at 9:07 pm #5051
I also went a few years ago – some of the best modelling I’ve ever seen.
Those ferns could be those etched ones that Lawrence Boul produces.January 21, 2019 at 9:53 pm #5052
Check out the youtube clips. Theres are variety of videos on there. Wish I could remember which one was about making scenery. I chatted to Nigel on my visit and they were casting nikau palm levels and building their own trees.January 22, 2019 at 9:52 pm #5053
Here’s their official video which has some nice close-up shots of ferns etc:
