DSG RS3 with DCC

Hi all,

Bit of an issue with the RS3 I recently purchased:

This is all good, but...

Bugger. Any ideas?

[Ed: Jolon's post from 2012 seems to cover a different issue, the chassis being too wide): http://www.nz120.org/forumtopic/nzr-dsg?page=1#comment-5246

The easiest option would be

The easiest option would be to use a smaller decoder (DN135P or similar) in the cab and onsell the pre fitted decoder.

Unless its a sound decoder its not worth the hassell.

The only other option would be to cut the tops out of the engine hoods and then use very thin plasticard for the tops.

Excellent, will see remove

Excellent, will see remove the decoder and see if I can get my hands on a different one. It's not a sound decoder so it doesn't matter too much.

So, finally got on to fixing

So, finally got on to fixing this: http://nzr120.blogspot.co.nz/2015/01/dsg-3249-in-nz120-ii.html

First, I removed the old decoder, and it immediately looked better:

I acquired a DZ146PS decoder (which is meant for Z scale):

And it now fits snugly:

Next step is to fit the LEDs and correctly wire them in... I may attempt reverse lights / cab light as well...

Nah there was only one DSG as far as I know that was in fruit salad livery with shunters refuges. I'm going to model DSG 3249 which was painted in NZ Rail blue about 1994 and had refuges.

Hi guys, for those who are on face book, there is nz120 modeling. Have a look. cheers

Just as a point of

Just as a point of interest... The DSG does NOT work with the new Kato RS2/3 chassis... Me and Jolon tried it today... and failed... Only works with the old chassis.

What doesn't work? Did you

What doesn't work? Did you mean the chassis doesn't fit? More info please.

Russ

The new chassis is shorter by

The new chassis is shorter by about 10mm, and trying to cut it down to fit is a nightmare. The new chassis are built alot lighter, and so there isnt enough metal on the chassis sides to cut it down, without the frame snapping in 2

Bugger, how much room does it

Bugger, how much room does it need, can you post a picture, maybe I can thin out something without breaking shapeways model. In my 1:24 dsg theres enough room for a computer to be installed.

No don't worry it's not the

No don't worry it's not the shapeways shell that needs changing, it's the chassis. The new chassis is shorter than the old one, and much taller. If you cut down the older Kato chassis, it works fine. Just to let people know not tio buy the new one. However the NZ120 DC needs theend of the long hood rounded off, and you need to add the class lights to the rear. And the fuel tanks on the DBR need thining (talk to Jolon).

Cheers :) good to know. Will

Cheers :) good to know. Will give him a call

As you can see from this

As you can see from this image, you can cut a recess into one end of the chassis of the Kato RS3, still fit the shell over the top and the correct height, and have the cab area relatively clear. No ugly red chip sitting visible for the world (and the public at a train show) to see!

Nice!

Nice!
